A personal note about this piece:

This painting is part of a series representing artifacts of recent past necessities. Once commonplace in many regions, this is an outhouse behind the one-room schoolhouse my mom went to in the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada. The small structure left to the elements and the passage of time is a capsule of a once-ubiquitous way of life.

This painting was made with thick layers of oil paint, applied with a palette knife. –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

When I lived in the West Village in NYC in the 90’s I noticed the quickly disappearing remnants of old piers on the Hudson. By the time I decided to document a particular view in a painting the pier was already gone. This painting was done completely from memory with an impression of looking across the Hudson River from the West Village to New Jersey. The posts stand as monuments to another time.  –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

I had a stack of books lying around from a demonstration I gave some people on perspective. I was drawn to the textures of the old book covers and pages and decided to make a still life composition.  –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

I visited this location several times before I was settled on the light conditions and colors to make a painting of the scene. Initially, my focus was on how the white tree trunk of the tree held so much presence in the surroundings, but my attention soon shifted to the sea of colors and textures from the background to the foreground. Tackling this as a watercolor was a challenge for me, and it went through several iterations, including ones where I came close to tossing the painting aside. I discovered that using an interplay of energetic pencil gestures along with painting created an overall effect that pulled the piece together. The quality of paint and pencil is best seen in person.  –Æ
