Ascension

llan admitted that the difference between madness and genius was subtle, and that he couldn’t with certainty say which it was in this case, but that he had his suspicions.”

A personal note about this piece:

Watch the video on the making of this painting.

This oil painting began on-site at Mass Audubon’s Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Lenox, MA. I was captivated by the relationships of textures, reflections, and underwater shadows in the shallow Pike’s Pond. My process for this painting began with rubbing the oil paint with rags into the canvas to get an overall impression and composition before moving to brushes. Ultimately, I finished the details using multiple techniques with a toothpick.

A personal note about this piece:

For many years, I commuted on the Hudson Train Line from the Hudson Valley to NYC. On one such trip, right at the intersection of the Hudson River and the Harlem River, I caught a view of a sunset through a murky train window. The partial abstraction of the view inspired me to make this painting. –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

A poetic trail at the Housatonic Flats features beautiful rows of trees and lavender-colored rocket flowers. I have a mind to do a series of paintings at this location. Perhaps this will be a first of many.  –Æ

A personal note about this landscape painting:

Near the foot of Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, MA is a pond, rich with lily pads and wild grass. In this painting, the iconic Peeskawso Peak of Monument Mountain can be seen reflected in the water.  –Æ
