A personal note about this piece:

There is an offshoot to a mountain trail I frequent in the Berkshires that conjures visions of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden.”  In that place, there is an orchard—atop a wild field—that feels abandoned, yet growth is everywhere. In this piece, I aimed to capture a feeling of lush abandonment, with every mark an invitation to explore and discover.–Æ

A personal note about this piece:

I almost didn’t attempt this piece because I wasn’t sure whether I could pack in all the visual information, maintain the softness, and still have it “read” with any kind of compositional definition. What I found in making it was that I had to trust that my marks—abstract in the closeness of the work—would eventually amount to something. In some ways, I was drawing blind—looking at the source and not my hand at times, and not using a visual reference at all for the times I did look at my hand. It feels as if I could continue making marks, indefinitely, sculpting depth into the grass, adding twigs or new areas of contrast…it’s hard to say that it’s finished. –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

In many ways, this piece is a compilation of memories from my frequent visits to a particular sandy bank on the Housatonic River. Every time I visit there, I’m attracted to something new—sounds, sights, things in the water, patterns in the sand, reflections, evidence of life, and so much more. In the creation of this piece, I took a risk by offering multiple perspectives at once to capture all of those impressions, resulting in a distorted, dream-like vision.–Æ

A personal note about this piece:

This drawing began as a study of the bark of an old weeping willow tree behind a gas station in Great Barrington, MA. I was drawn to the trunk’s twists and turns, the gnarly burls, knobby roots, and spindly branches. As I explored textures in other such drawings, I found myself returning to them to create invented, more fuller compositions. In the case of this study, I invented the surroundings to create the finished composition—the result of which inspired me to produce a full series of detailed drawings. –Æ

A personal note about this piece:

The second piece of the series (but in may ways, the first completed work), I approached this for the challenge of capturing dense foliage textures through line. The effect of the “study” was more of a feeling of a finished composition, which inspired me to return to the first study (“Tree Study #1) and approach my “studies” as completed works. –Æ
