Dip Pen Sketches

From the sketchbook of Andreas Engel

About this Series

In 2024, after seeing an online version of J.M.W Turner’s sketchbooks, I was inspired to go further, and study the sketchbooks of Rembrandt, Dürer, Leonardo, and other great masters. I found myself pulled towards the dip pen, and brown ink. I experimented with different types of nibs and inks to find the kind of line quality and sensitivity that worked the best for me. I also sought out a leatherbound notebook with raw, cream-colored paper—more for the romantic quality than anything—and started sketching things, from silverware to paper towels, my own hands, household objects, and landscapes. I discovered a new love that inspires me to fill out my sketchbook with beautiful things. The examples shown here are only a small selection from the pages of my book.
